Hitec has revamped its radio line with the introduction of three sleek new systems under the Aggressor banner. The Aggressor CRX replaces the Lynx 3D as the company's flagship computer radio. With a 20-model memory (with model naming), channel mixing, servo subtrims, a dot-matrix display and a 1024-step resolution for super-smooth servo operation, it's loaded with features that are unavailable on any of Hitec's previous car radio systems. Let's take a closer look at Hitec's hot pistol.
CRX HARDWARE FEATURES
FM OPERATION
Naturally, Hitec's top-of-the-line transmitter is a frequency modulation (FM) unit; FM radio systems provide cleaner, more reliable reception than amplitude modulation (AM) systems and are much less prone to glitching in crowded environments such as the racetrack where lots of transmitters are operating simultaneously.
HIGH-RESOLUTION LCD
The sophisticated multi-pixel liquid crystal display (LCD) allows graphics and symbols to be displayed clearly and allows users to make many adjustments on a single menu screen. The function button is used to navigate through the various function menus, while the select, data plus and data minus buttons are used to adjust the various parameters of the selected functions. Battery voltage, total "on" time, model setting, steering dual rate and brake automatic travel length (ATL) values and trim settings for all three channels are always displayed on the startup screen.
REMOVABLE MODULE
You can easily switch from 27MHz to 75MHz (or vice versa) by installing the appropriate radio frequency (RF) module. The CRX also accepts Hitec's Spectra Module, which can synthesize all 30 75MHz transmitter (TX) frequencies.
DIGITAL TRIMS
The throttle, steering and third-channel trims, dual-rate functions and brake ATL are adjusted electronically by moving the digital trim levers that surround the steering wheel. The steering, throttle and third channel trim values are always displayed on the screen, and the appropriate cursors move when one of the levers is pressed.
STEERING-WHEEL TENSION ADJUSTMENT
Tightening or loosening the tension-adjustment screw above the steering wheel will adjust the steering wheel's tension.
TRANSMITTER CHARGING JACK
A charging jack on the radio's left side allows you to plug in the included charger to juice up the Ni-Cd TX batteries.
INTERCHANGEABLE RUBBER GRIP PADS
The CRX has a removable, rubber grip pad that cushions the handgrip. Optional pads in assorted colors are available to customize the radio's look.
LOW-BATTERY ALARM
The CRX emits a continuous beeping when the TX battery power is too low to provide reliable operation.
* TWENTY-MODEL MEMORY
With room to store data for 20 models, the CRX is the new king of model memory. A6-character model-naming feature makes identifying each model easy.
* THREE-CHANNEL OPERATION
The CRX's auxiliary third-channel function can be programmed to pravide partial or full travel in both directions to perform transmission shift functions on a nitro-powered monster truck and to provide linear servo travel to control a remote, fuel-mixture needle valve on a gas boat or large-scale RC car (or any other function you can dream up). When it's in the linear mode, the auxiliary digital trim lever on the right side of the wheel is used to ake trim adjustments. Set the auxiliary channel to the shift positiopn, and you'll be able to use the shift button that's on the handgrip just below the wheel to operate a shifter servo.
* STEERING & THROTTLE TRIMS
All radios have this feature, but the CRX gets the job done using digital trim levers around the steering wheel.
* SERVO-REVERSING
This function is available on all three channels and is accessed through the program menu. The settings for all three channels appear on a single menu screen to simplify programming.
* SERVO SUBTRIM ADJUSTMENT
The CRX is the first Hitec radio to have this highly useful feature, and it's available on all three channels. The subtrim function is used like the regular trim function, but the adjustment increments are much finer. This makes it much easier to center the servos, and it's particularly helpful when trimming out your car's steering.
* UP/DOWN TIMER
The CRX doesn't have a lap counter, but it does have a timer that can be programmed to count up from zero (great for measuring run time) or down from a time you set. The maximum setting is 59 minutes, 59 seconds.
* SERVO MIXING
This advanced feature allows two servos to be controlled by a single input from the wheel or trigger by mixing the selected channel with the third channel. It's useful in setting up large-scale vehicles with independent four-wheel braking and monster truck with four-wheel steering.
* ADJUSTABLE ENDPOINTS (EPA)
The EPA values for "ST" (steering)'" THRO" (throttle) and "AUX" (auxiliary or third channel) are displayed on a single menu screen to simplify programming. To access the channel to be adjusted, press the select button and use the data plus or minus buttons to make adjustments. In addition to the usual break endpoint set-ting, the CRX's ATL function allows you to adjust the endpoint of the brake travel while driving by means of a thumb switch.
* EXPONENTIAL
"Expo" can be appllied to the steering and throttle channels. The expo is displayed on the screen as a negative or positive value, and a line graph shows the steering or throttle curve.
Adjusting the exponential changes the way the servo responds to input from the transmitter. For example, if you set the steering expo to a negative value, the servo will respond less quickly to movement of the steering wheel near neutral and more quickly as it reaches the end of its travel. A positive setting has the opposite effect: the greater the value, the greater the difference between most and least responsive.
* ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS)
After entering the programing mode, press the function button to scroll over to the ABS menu. Press the data plus or minus buttons simultaneously to turn the ABS function on or off. From a single function screen, you can set the ABS point (the amount of servo travel that must be reached before the ABS activates), delay (the amount of time the brakes must be applied before the ABS kicks in), depth (the amount the servo moves as it modulates the brake) and speed (how the duration of each brake pulses during modulation).
* DUAL-RATE STEERING
The CRX features a thumb dial to adjust the steering dual rate. Moving the dial changes the value shown on the LCD, and the dial's position makes it easy to adjust as you drive.
